About Us:

There is a need for an ongoing mechanism to obtain up-to-date data to address health policy issues.  Rapidly occurring therapeutic advances, a changing epidemiology of HIV infection, and the financing of medical care for HIV-infected individuals all have a major effect on patterns of health care resource utilization for HIV disease.  In response to this need, the purpose of this project is to gather and analyze timely and relevant data on the accessibility, quality, utilization, safety, and costs of health care services provided to persons with HIV disease.

The method designed to accomplish this purpose is a network of HIV care providers from across the U.S. who provide timely demographic, clinical, and health services costs and utilization data linked to relevant clinical data on HIV-infected persons.  The network of HIV care providers is a consortium of adult and pediatric clinics in which some are hospital-based with a university affiliation, others are hospital-based not affiliated with a university, and others are community-based providers.

The project supports an ongoing process of comprehensive data collection beginning as far back as 2000 from a heterogeneous array of providers and patients.  The data is assembled and analyzed rapidly, and the process is flexible to modify data collection to focus on emerging issues of concern.

Data from the HIVRN has been published in multiple journals including:

AIDS Patient Care and STD’s
American Journal of Managed Care
Clinical Infectious Diseases
General Hospital of Psychiatry
Health Services Research
HIV Medicine
Journal of American Medical Association

Journal of General Internal Medicine
Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment
Medical Care
New England Journal of Medicine

Data has also been presented at multiple conferences nationally and internationally including adult and pediatric clinical meetings, infectious diseases and HIV meetings, and health services and methodology meetings.
