Vision for Baltimore

Between fall 2016 and summer 2019, the Baltimore City Health Department will provide school-based vision screening to all students in the Baltimore City Public Schools (BCPS) from grades pre-K through eighth grade. Students who fail the vision screening will be eligible for vision services by Vision To Learn (VTL), which will conduct comprehensive eye exams and provide glasses, free of charge, to students who need them. A Johns Hopkins University research team is collaborating with BCHD, BCPS and VTL to assist with implementation of vision services and measure their impact on academic performance. The study is funded by the Robert M. and Diane S. Levy Family. Johns Hopkins provides program support through a collaboration between the School of education and the Wilmer Eye Institute. To date, over 1,000 free pairs of glasses have been provided to Baltimore students.
