East Baltimore Community School (EBCS)

By April 2014, East Baltimore Development, Inc. (EBDI) will open a new state-ofthe art elementary and middle public contract school to house the East Baltimore Community School, which is now in its second year operating from modular buildings. At full capacity, the EBCS, in partnership with The Johns Hopkins and Morgan State Universities, will provide an exemplary free public education for approximately 540 elementary and middle-grades students, as well as health and social services, recreational opportunities, and cultural enrichment programs for young people of the neighborhood. EBCS will prepare students for college success by offering robust programs in mathematics, sciences, music, physical education, arts and the humanities, linked directly to the knowledge and practice resources of Johns Hopkins. There are collective efforts by the JH School of Education, Special Education Dept and the Kennedy Krieger Institute to review programs on special education data and program development. In addition, UHI, in collaboration with EBDI, has received grant funding to work on the new K-8 school and to develop an early childhood center.
